Both boys made it through their PDA closure procedures. It’s been a full, emotional couple of days with a lot of ups and downs, but we’re so proud of how hard they’re both fighting.
Colton
Colton had his PDA closed successfully and overall tolerated the procedure well. They did find a large clot in a major vein (IVC), so that’s something the team is watching closely. His blood pressures were a bit unstable after, but medications have helped and he’s responding.
He needed blood and platelets after the procedure, but thankfully there are no signs of internal bleeding and his levels have stabilized. Overnight, his leg became swollen, and with the clot, they started him on a blood thinner to help.
It was a busy night for him, and his oxygen needs went up for a bit, but after some rest today he settled in and they’ve already been able to wean his oxygen down some.
The best news, his heart echo showed the PDA is fully closed and his heart function looks strong. He needs to REST and grow!
Declan
Declan also had his PDA closed and handled it pretty well. He’s remained stable on the ventilator with steady oxygen needs.
There was a brief concern for his belly after an X-ray, but that has since resolved. Out of caution, he’s being kept NPO and started on antibiotics while they keep a close eye on things.
His labs showed low blood counts and clotting factors, so he received blood, platelets, and additional support.
His follow-up echo showed a small residual shunt and some increased lung pressures, but overall his heart function is good.
Overall
Both are stable, but being watched very closely. There are still a lot of moving pieces; blood counts, clots, infection risk, and lung pressures, but they are in the best hands and being monitored every step of the way.
We’re taking it hour by hour right now. It’s been a lot, but we’re holding onto the wins, especially two strong hearts and two incredibly tough little boys.
We’ll continue to update as things settle and we learn more
